Summer is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest! Hot sunny days call for outdoor fun, family get togethers, and cute comfy clothes (… with ventilation for all the body parts you didn’t know could sweat ?).
I designed the Cowl Neck Top the summer after I had my daughter, when I needed something I could easily breastfeed in (hello gorgeous drapey neckline!), but also wanted something less clingy for the comfort of my postpartum bod. I’ve made tons since for all seasons (see my Long Sleeve Tunic version in a Sweater Knit ?)
But my absolute favorite (that I’ve consistently worn several times a week since the temperature hit 60) is this Sleeveless Dress version with pockets!!
This particular Cowl Neck Dress is made from Bamboo Spandex. If you’ve never tried it, PLEASE give it a try and thank me later! It is super breathable with a drape similar to Rayon Spandex but holds up a little better to washing (did I mention I wear this *all* the time).
To make this pattern happier for thinner & slinkier knits (that some of our sewing machines like to EAT as we try to hem them… Rude!) I designed the neckline and bottom with facings! And the Sleeveless version has arm bands!
The pattern also comes with an option for a Modesty Panel if the neckline comes down too low for your taste or if you are nursing and want extra coverage when you pull the neck down for boob access. I decided to forgo the panel in this dress because I prefer the least amount of layers possible on hot days.
The only thing that I might do differently next time is to use a more structured fabric like Cotton Lycra for the in-seam pockets. Sweet, airy Bamboo decides to droop a bit with the weight of my phone. All the more reason to leave the phone inside and use those pockets for what they are really intended for: SNACKS!!!
